Frequently Asked Questions

Q. I'm interested in trying the sport, but have never played before. Can I try before I join?
A.
Yes. Potential new members are encouraged to come along during the quieter sessions and have a go. Email or telephone the club for information (details at foot of page).


Q. Do I need to buy the equipment before playing?
A.
No. The club has a supply of bowls and shoes which can be used at no charge, however you would be expected to provide your own equipment later.


Q. Is there coaching available for new players?
A.
Yes. The club has a comprehensive list of qualified coaches, who are also certified under the Children and Vulnerable Persons Protection Act. Coaching is available to all members.


Q. At what age can I start playing?
A.
The Club encourages members of all ages to participate. The only criteria is that you must be able to hold and deliver a bowl. At present, the club has a junior section with ages from 6 years to 16 years, and provides coaching on Saturday mornings and Sunday evenings. There are also competitions for the junior section.


Q. Do I have to play in leagues and competitions?
A.
No. The majority of rink space is taken up by leagues and competitions, however there are always vacant rinks which can be booked in advance through the office. Once you feel confident enough, you can then join in the leagues and competitions. The club also runs sweep games on certain days during the season. You can also come down and give your name at the office and play as a substitute in the league games.


Q. Can I bring visitors to the club?
A.
Yes. Once you have joined as a member, you can bring visitors into the club. You can also book rinks for visiting teams if they are available.


Q. Can I use the Club for Private Functions?
A.
Yes. The facilities of the club are available to all members during the year, if available,for private functions.


Q. What is the dress code within the club?
A.
Smart but casual dress is allowed when playing league and bounce games. Grey trousers and white shirt are required for later stages of competitions and representative games. Denims are allowed in the clubhouse, but not on the greens. Ladies may wear tailored trousers when playing.


Q. What social activities do you have?
A.
We have occassional social evenings.
